Locations
Anyone studying at Alanus University, with its locations in Alfter (between Cologne and Bonn) and Mannheim, does not work in a vacuum, but in environments that shape, challenge, and help define them. Places to grow, learn, and feel at home.
Three places – one aspiration
Many prospective students ask themselves: Where exactly is Alfter? What can Mannheim offer me? And why should I study in one of these places in particular?
Between studio, stage, seminar room, and university life, different perspectives on art, education, and society emerge in Alfter and Mannheim. Each location has its own character. What connects them is a shared aspiration: not merely to preserve knowledge, but to apply it – artistically, pedagogically, and socially.
All three places combine thinking and action. Students do not work on theories or techniques in isolation, but always in context: in the art studio, on the theater stage, in the design process, or directly in educational practice. Learning here does not happen in the abstract, but in concrete situations, supported by close guidance from lecturers and in places that inspire.

Inspiration between timber framing and horse pastures
Our Campus I – Johannishof is fully dedicated to the arts. It is the nucleus of Alanus University, which began here in the 1970s as an independent institution for arts education. A place designed for everyone who wants to create, perform, and establish themselves artistically. Art studios, rehearsal rooms, and stages are not extras here, but shape the everyday university experience of our students, who can work intensively on developing their own artistic voice.
The campus has its own courtyard theater and thrives on its closeness to nature, its tranquility, and its inspiring spaces. And anyone longing for sociability will find it at the Alanus Café with views over the Rhine Valley or on the beach volleyball court.
Focus areas:
Fine Arts, Art-Pedagogy-Therapy, Acting, Eurythmy
Room for development
Officially opened in 2009, Campus II – Villestraße complements the university landscape in Alfter. Here, the perspective broadens: from purely artistic and performative expression to an in-depth engagement with social science, educational, and design-related questions.
At Villestraße, educational science, art therapy, business, and architecture come together. Theory and practice are interwoven. Seminars, projects, and interdisciplinary formats shape everyday life. In addition to traditional seminar rooms, three studio buildings with student workspaces provide room for development. Campus II also houses the Alanus Library as well as the cafeteria, café – and the obligatory beach volleyball court.
