ABOUT THE PROJECT (2021 – 2023)

Funding from the Software AG Foundation (SAGST) and the Pedagogical Research Center Waldorf has enabled Analog-Digidactics, since March 1, 2021, to gradually expand into a good-practice book project.
The aim is to select, further develop, and publish examples of practical projects at kindergartens and primary schools that combine media literacy with media (addiction) prevention at their core and implement “Digital Education” largely without the use of tablets and similar devices.
All examples focus on the following principles:
- Analog before digital: First get to know the principles of media worlds through media without a screen. Because: “Media education must build on media evolution” (Bert te Wildt 2015). Screen time should not be unnecessarily increased; instead, children should be able to retrace the cultural history of media with all their senses.
- Producing before consuming: Put active creation in the analog and later also the digital media worlds (not “pressing buttons” and “operating machines”) at the forefront.
- Transparency before “black box”: Work with teaching and learning materials that make the mode(s) of operation as transparent as possible. End devices such as tablets, for example, are only suitable for children to a very limited extent because they involve hundreds of internal processes invisible to the user, like in a “black box.”
Analog-digidactic approaches can prove especially valuable for education and media education because they can be implemented at all educational institutions regardless of their particular pedagogical orientation – always with the developmental phases of children in mind. Implementation requires neither expensive infrastructure nor regular updates with new software versions, and the transparency of the teaching and learning materials used invites learners to get to the bottom of the question “How does this work?” so that later, in adolescence and adulthood, they can engage critically with new technological developments.
