Eurythmy Therapy
Master of Arts

Alanus University offers various options for studying curative eurythmy/eurythmy therapy, depending on the qualifications applicants already bring with them. The seminars are designed so that teaching can take place jointly for all students in a cohort.

The content of the master’s program is structured into 9 thematic blocks (modules).

MA 1 Foundations of Eurythmy Therapy
Students acquire skills for understanding and instrumentally transforming eurythmic movements into eurythmy-therapeutic movements. They are enabled to experience the effects of the basic eurythmy-therapeutic exercises in order to develop the ability to work on and carry out these exercises independently. Students also acquire professionally relevant social skills.

MA 2 Applied Eurythmy Therapy I
Students are specifically prepared for everyday professional practice; topics such as therapeutic goals, treatment plans, and treatment processes are developed, and appropriate documentation and self-critical evaluation are practiced. This includes an introduction to general and special pathology from the perspective of curative eurythmy, and indications and contraindications are addressed.

MA 3 Applied Eurythmy Therapy II
Eurythmy therapy is explored in greater depth on the basis of specific clinical conditions. Students learn to understand therapeutic exercise sequences for specific indications and to create patient-appropriate therapeutic goals, treatment plans, and implementation (duration, intensity, etc.). They learn to independently expand and adapt standard indications into specific exercises. Students are able to place eurythmy therapy in the context of other artistic therapies and critically reflect on its specific possibilities and limitations.

MA 4 Medicine I
Students acquire basic knowledge of general and special pathology relating to physical and mental illnesses. This may include both conventional medicine and anthroposophically extended medicine. Starting from knowledge of the manifestations of various specific illnesses, they develop an understanding of the ill person, for whom general therapeutic considerations are then developed and anthroposophical therapeutic approaches are presented. Students are enabled to independently develop more in-depth knowledge of selected clinical conditions.

MA 5 Medicine II
Students acquire basic knowledge of special pathology in the fields of orthopedics, neurology, psychiatric disorders, and curative education. They develop understanding and deeper knowledge of fundamental disease processes in these specialist areas. Pathophysiology can be analyzed diagnostically. The aim is to create disease-specific, integrative therapy plans with progress documentation.

MA 6 Studium Generale
Studium Generale is a component of all degree programs at Alanus University. The courses in this foundational supplementary program encourage students to think independently and critically, broaden their horizons, provide them with orientation knowledge, and enable them to find and articulate their own standpoint in cultural and social contexts. Topics addressed include questions from philosophy, the arts, and the social sciences.

MA 7 Artistic/Therapeutic Supplementary Subjects
By acquiring basic knowledge and skills in a supplementary subject, students are encouraged to view their own subject from new perspectives again and again. Intensive engagement with related or different art forms and therapies provides important inspiration. Through engagement with other art forms/therapeutic modalities, students can develop a differentiated perception of and broaden the means of eurythmic/therapeutic expression.

MA 8 Master’s Thesis
The master’s thesis consists of the academic examination of a case report directly related to eurythmy-therapeutic practice. According to specified criteria, and in the spirit of research- and/or practice-oriented scholarship, a eurythmy-therapeutic treatment is professionally evaluated, reflected upon, and documented in writing. The results are correlated with other academically documented findings, and through critical reflection the student’s own results are placed in the context of previous findings. The written case report is supplemented by an oral presentation and discussion of the research findings.

MA 9 Practical Component
The practical implementation of the foundations of eurythmy therapy in applied eurythmy therapy, under the mentorship of experienced colleagues, accompanies the course of study. Practical experience is intended to take place in various fields of eurythmy therapy. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, students conduct their own therapy sessions. The therapy concepts they develop independently in collaboration with physicians and specialist colleagues are documented. Participation in team meetings or therapeutic consultations is part of the internship.

In addition to the scheduled times for seminars, the program offers a high degree of freedom and flexibility in terms of time, allowing students to choose a study format that suits their individual life situation.

Throughout the program, students receive regular and intensive support, as well as individual assistance in selecting practice locations and mentors. In addition, specific clinical conditions and related topics are taught by a large group of qualified guest lecturers.

After successfully completing the program, graduates receive a master’s certificate from Alanus University as well as a certificate from the Medical Section at the Goetheanum/Dornach.

In addition to the courses offered in the master’s degree program in eurythmy therapy, students also have the opportunity to attend other interdisciplinary study offerings and events at Alanus University.

Depending on your individual qualifications, we offer various routes of admission to the master’s degree program in eurythmy therapy.

Basic requirements for admission to the program are a completed eurythmy training course at a recognized training institution (eurythmy diploma from the Section for Performing Arts/Goetheanum), a successful admissions interview, and, if applicable, a successful entrance examination.

Admission
After an initial information or advising session, we invite you to an admissions interview in Alfter. A successful admissions interview is the prerequisite for enrollment.

Eurythmy therapy is recognized as a medical health profession and qualifies graduates to work in schools, clinics, rehabilitation facilities, therapeutic centers, and in private practice. Work as a eurythmy therapist is based on collaboration with physicians, and some health insurance providers cover treatment costs. In addition, work in social fields or intercultural contexts is also very possible. The possible fields of application are broad and can be combined well with one another, making it easy to enter professional practice.

You are welcome to gain an impression of everyday student life through an observation visit and experience classes together with students and lecturers. We would be happy to discuss suitable times for an observation visit with you in advance.

The Institute for Eurythmy Therapy is dedicated to basic research and the development of research approaches that do justice to the special therapeutic nature of eurythmy therapy.

At Alanus University, the Institute for Eurythmy Therapy is embedded within the Department of Artistic Therapies. Worldwide, it is connected with clinics and research institutes that pay particular attention to eurythmy therapy.

Research aims to lay the groundwork and develop foundations in order to identify what is original and unique about eurythmy therapy, so that it can be implemented ever more strongly in social and therapeutic contexts. Research is oriented, on the one hand, toward the practical needs of eurythmy therapy and, on the other hand, toward the broader social and therapeutic environment. Research questions arise from working relationships with cooperation partners.

For those who are interested but do not wish to earn an academic degree, it is possible to take the certificate course in eurythmy therapy. The basic requirement for admission is a completed degree in eurythmy at a recognized training institution (eurythmy diploma from the Section for Performing Arts/Goetheanum), as well as a successful admissions interview.

After successful completion, graduates receive a certificate in eurythmy therapy from Alanus University as well as a diploma from the Medical Section at the Goetheanum/Dornach. The standard period of study is 4 semesters, and studies begin each year in the autumn semester in September.
