Designing sustainable living spaces for the future

The Architecture degree program at Alanus University in Alfter near Bonn offers comprehensive professional training while also fostering personal development.

Studying Architecture at Alanus University means preparing to address today’s pressing questions surrounding the sustainable design of our living spaces. As future designers of tomorrow, students learn to engage holistically with the complex social, political, ecological, and economic interrelationships of architecture.

The focus is on key topics such as the socio-ecological transformation of society, the careful use of our available resources, the common-good-oriented development of projects, co-creative and transdisciplinary design processes, and digitalization in planning and construction. In this way, students develop an individual mindset and design/planning strategies and bring together their diverse interests and abilities in collaborative projects.

Architecture as a holistic process

At Alanus University, we see architecture as a process that brings complex interrelationships together through design in forward-looking projects. In the three-year undergraduate Bachelor of Architecture and the consecutive Master of Architecture, students work intensively, integratively, and interdisciplinarily in small year groups. The project-based program is embedded in a wide range of electives covering topics from art, science, and society. Together, both degree programs meet the requirements for membership in the Chamber of Architects.

Ten teaching areas shape the department’s distinctive profile in the context of current societal issues. All staff members ensure optimal study conditions in which both sound professional preparation for architectural practice and broad personal development are possible.

All students have access to workspaces in the shared studio building, which, in addition to a model-making workshop, is equipped with 3D printers, copiers, printers and plotters, as well as a spatial laboratory for 1:1 experiments.

The department publishes exciting study projects and insights into the degree program in the online magazine mag - Mensch.Architektur.Gesellschaft.
