The teaching area Architecture & Resources conveys, on the one hand, the fundamentals of building design and in-depth knowledge in the field of building typology and, on the other hand, the fundamentals in the areas of technical building systems, energy-efficient construction, and advanced knowledge in resource-optimized planning and construction. Independent, sustainable building concepts in terms of both use and resources are a core objective of design and development teaching. Transformation strategies for existing buildings are of particular importance here. The modules of the Architecture & Resources teaching area are offered in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs and aim for a holistic, integrated development of space, use, construction, and building technology.

Head: Prof. Swen Geiss

The teaching area Architecture and Art in Dialogue opens up spaces for experimentation and experience for architecture students. It is responsible for the modules “Architecture and Art” in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs and organizes events in the fields of two- and three-dimensional work, sound and music, movement and expression, installation, and intervention.

The research focuses of the teaching area lie in the fields of architectural perception, artistic foundations of architecture, temporary interventions in public space, and art in architecture.

Architects operate at the interfaces between art and engineering. They should be able to correctly assess the contributions of all those involved in construction and integrate them into the planning concept. The subject area of Building Technology teaches knowledge in structural engineering, building surveying, and the contributions of specialist engineers to be integrated into the design process. In design assignments or comparable projects, students experience the interactions between building technology, design, and spatial impact.

The teaching area Project Management imparts, on the one hand, the tools for well-organized, structured, and goal-oriented work. On the other hand, students are enabled to think in open-ended processes, develop flexible process designs, operate in interdisciplinary teams, and work in complex projects and diverse stakeholder constellations. The modules of the Project Management teaching area are primarily located in the Master’s degree program, where initial tools are learned and applied through a mix of input and team-oriented exercises. In addition, this knowledge is transferred to students’ own study projects.

Common-good-oriented project development describes sustainably conceived project development that goes far beyond the mere combination of the production factors land, use/project idea, and capital. The focus is not on the short-term profit maximization of the project developer, but on the sustainable development of projects that are valuable and meaningful for the community and society as a whole. Projects of this kind require the commitment and active participation of many stakeholders. The task of common-good-oriented project development is therefore to design a process architecture that is both viable and innovative, sustainably ensuring quality while unlocking the creativity of many.

The modules of the teaching area are located within the Master’s degree program in Architecture and encompass the full range of strategic project development, from the initiation of a sustainable project idea to the establishment of a permanent supporting structure. As part of the seminar, students learn to develop concepts independently and with their own individual approach, and to present them clearly.
