Socio-ecological Transformation

The certificate is aimed at anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of the ecological challenges of our time in order to play an active role in the associated social transformations in various areas of life and professional fields.

Students at Alanus University can complete the certificate course as part of Studium Generale or as an additional accompanying course of study.

• You will become familiar with the cultural-historical shift in understandings of the planetary environment and the related concepts of the human being.
• You will acquire basic knowledge of key ecosystems and their functions.
• You will learn about the decisive socio-ecological challenges and exemplary ways of addressing them creatively and on a sound academic basis.
• You will learn to develop your own attitudes and ways of acting in the context of current ecological crises.

The certificate consists of three modules.

In the basic module, you will gain insight into up to four central approaches to understanding and shaping socio-ecological transformation: ecophilosophy, nature and environmental ethics, ecosensitive art history, and sociology of sustainability.

In the practical module, you will practise putting your knowledge from the basic module into action for the conception and implementation of a group or individual project.

In the final module, the knowledge acquired in the other modules is assessed.

Completing all modules corresponds to comprehensive basic or individual further qualification at university level worth 12 ECTS credits (i.e. a workload of 300 hours). More information on the structure and content of the certificate course can be found in the module handbook and the examination regulations.

The certificate course can be attended for a maximum of the duration of enrolment at Alanus University. All relevant coursework can be completed within four semesters at the latest. You can complete the coursework flexibly and largely in any order you choose (with the exception of the final module): either as part of Studium Generale, as an additional accompanying course of study, or as a guest auditor.

The Department of Philosophical and Aesthetic Education offers several related courses each semester. In addition, other courses at Alanus University that are clearly related to the topics of the certificate course can be credited.

Enrolment at Alanus University in a full-time degree program, part-time degree program, or as a guest auditor.

The certificate course is free of charge for regularly enrolled students. Guest auditors are charged a fee of EUR 100 for the issuance of the certificate.
