Art Therapy Methods in Geriatrics
Fields of challenge: dementia, depression and anxiety disorders / selection and development of methods
The broad field of geriatrics and gerontology is becoming increasingly important for art therapists, cultural geragogues, cultural educators, and artists. Due to demographic change and increased life expectancy, applied art therapy methods are gaining ground not only in clinical settings but also in institutions. Process-oriented artistic creation can become increasingly important in these areas of work. One ongoing challenge is to provide appropriate services for “very elderly people” with psychological impairments such as dementia and/or depression and/or anxiety-related issues. This requires a particular art-therapeutic approach for the (re-)activation of creative potential. The degree of the respective impairment is highly significant for the selection of appropriate art therapy methods.
This continuing education program presents interventions for the clinical environment as well as preventive or accompanying services, for example for work in senior or nursing care facilities. Various methods for individual and group settings are presented and learned through self-experience. The development of methods is also of central importance.
