How do we actually learn? And is it enough if learning takes place primarily through rational understanding and intellectual abilities? The lecture “The Power of Imagination” by Jost Schieren, Professor of School and Waldorf Education at Alanus University and initiator of the International Campus Waldorf (ICW), focuses on a dimension of learning that often receives too little attention in school-based educational processes: understanding through images, perception, and inner imagination.

In Waldorf education, imagination therefore plays a central role. This means far more than mere fantasy. Image-based learning can open up new approaches to a topic, address different levels of understanding, and connect learning content with personal experience. Jost Schieren shows the importance of imagination for learning and why it is also relevant for contemporary education.

The lecture opens ICW 2026. Under the title “Waldorf Tools – What are they? How do we use them? Why do we use them?” the international online lecture series by Alanus University is dedicated to key methods of Waldorf education and their significance for the education of the future. Scholars and practitioners from various countries explore how and why these methods are used and what impulses they can provide for today’s educational processes.
