Re:Public – CityLeaks Academy 2019

From August to September 2019, the fifth edition of the international CityLeaks Urban Art Festival took place in Cologne. Under the title “re:public,” the festival was dedicated in both content and program to structural change and, in connection with this, the circular relationship between identity and memory in Cologne-Ehrenfeld.

The heart of the festival is the vacant railway arches on Hüttenstraße. Here, the Italian architecture collective Orizzontale is building the temporary CityLeaks Festival Center, thereby creating new spaces for art and civic engagement.

As part of the festival, the CityLeaks Academy took place from 09 to 15 September 2019, to which architecture students from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences and TH Köln were invited to explore Hüttenstraße, including its vacant railway arches, and redesign it temporarily.

Under the guiding theme “Simul et singulis,” the students, together with Studio Orizzontale, developed mobile architectures and temporary installations that created a connection between the Festival Center and the street space. The results of the workshop were presented to the public on 15 September 2019 as part of a ceremonial opening.
