Green Teams – Employee Engagement for Sustainable Development

The sustainability transformation in companies requires the commitment of all employees. On the one hand, they are involved in implementing improved ecological and social standards and processes; on the other hand, they actively help shape the establishment of more sustainable strategies and structures. This takes place partly ‘on the job,’ i.e. in fulfillment of an assigned role, but often also ‘beyond the job’—through personal engagement beyond the actual work task. Sustainability networks, which in recent years have often been built by employees as part of sustainability engagement ‘from below,’ play a special role in this context. With their member base, they can support the sustainability strategy, but they can also provide their own impetus and drive forward the company’s sustainability development.

The project examines forms of Green Teams in practice. The following aspects are the main focus:

  • Development paths of Green Teams: founding, growth, structure formation
  • Tasks and roles of Green Teams in relation to the organization’s sustainability architecture
  • Organizational impact dimensions of Green Team engagement, such as employee retention effects, network building, and others
  • Motivational and identity work of employees in Green Teams
  • Job crafting
