A project series by M:AI and universities from NRW

The professional profile of the architect has long required far more than just an appealing design. In addition to professional and social competence, architects increasingly need communication skills and an understanding of communicative situations and tasks: How do I make an architectural position clearly visible and comprehensible? With whom do I need to communicate, and how? How do I communicate architecture? What role does communication play in the project? Which communication channel is the right one for the respective constellation of stakeholders? These and other questions are to be addressed in a project series by M:AI in partnership with four universities over a period of four years. With “Borderline,” an offering is to be developed for students that understands and practices communication as a natural element of their own work. The Alanus University is leading off, having launched the program in the autumn semester of 2016/17. As part of the cooperation, a series of events is being organized, including a design seminar, a short-format design exercise in collaboration with RWTH and TH Köln, a lecture series on the topic of communication, and an artistic intervention on tram line 18.

“Borderline” is conceived as a joint project; the seminar is developed and supported collaboratively by all project partners involved. Each year, a seminar assignment is set under the title “Borderline.”
