The central focus of the class led by Professor Beatrice Cron is color itself, the phenomenology of color, as well as its magic and effect in the context of painting. During their studies, students engage with questions such as: How is a feeling expressed, and how does it appear in color and form? How can dynamism, movement, and vitality be created on a static surface?
Other topics that also play a role and that the artists engage with include the fascination of composition and its significance in the non-representational or free play of forms, as well as working with materials such as earth and plant pigments. The craft aspect of painting is also an essential part of the class: Professor Beatrice Cron complements the conceptual explorations with painting exercises in which students engage with physical, even dance-like elements in order to experience what they have learned through their own bodies. The idea is to move from this experience into action. The aim of the teaching is always for the artists to develop a position of their own.
Teamwork is important for participation in the class – this also includes collaborations with alumni or artists from other disciplines. Professor Beatrice Cron places great value on engaging in dialogue with the students. In class, assignments serve to set a certain framework so that through experimentation students can find their own path to developing their strength and expression.
“What matters to me is finding a productive way of working together – the studio has to buzz! Only then does a dialogue begin that makes the projects exciting, stimulating, and interesting. A final exhibition can make this experienced process visible and thus accessible and tangible for others.”
