Alanus University appoints Miriam Hamel as the world’s first professor of process architecture in the field of architecture.
Building is a process that must be shaped sustainably and for the common good. Miriam Hamel is dedicated to this concern as the newly appointed junior professor of process architecture and artistic process design in the field of architecture. With this appointment by university rector Hans-Joachim Pieper, she is now truly one of a kind worldwide.
“With this, the Department of Architecture underscores the importance of artistic process design, for example as an activation method in the so-called Phase 0 or as a participation instrument for planning and construction projects,” says Dean Prof. Dr. Florian Kluge. Prof. Willem-Jan Beeren, chair of the appointment committee, adds: “More than ten years ago, the department introduced the term process architecture into the planning debate to make it clear that building culture depends to a great extent on a good process culture. Current trends (keywords: ‘Immovielien,’ affordable housing, citizen participation) prove us right. We are delighted to now establish this field prominently with a dedicated professorship.”
Miriam Hamel studied architecture at TU Darmstadt and until now has been a research associate in the Department of Architecture as well as deputy head of the Institute for Process Architecture at Alanus University. She is currently completing her doctorate in the area of art in the practice-based PhD program Art and Design at Bauhaus University Weimar on the topic “Stadtfinden – Artistic research on the significance and function of artistic strategies in the context of urban development processes.”
With Miriam Hamel in her new role as professor, the department gains a skilled and committed colleague who raises important questions about society’s capacity for transformation at the intersection of art, architecture, and scholarship, and addresses them in concrete teaching and research projects.
