Gain practical experience during your Bachelor's degree in ‘Business Administration – Rethinking Economics’.

With Globus as her practice partner, our student Lina-Marie Vollmer is already studying Business Administration – Rethinking Economics in her 4th semester. After each semester at Alanus University, she spends 2 ½ months at Globus and gets to know practical work. At Globus, Lina works in a wide variety of areas to get to know them from the ground up and to take on more responsibility in each practical phase. “I spent my first practical phase in the non-food sector, in the department for household goods and electrical items, and familiarized myself with Globus,” says Lina, and goes on to speak enthusiastically about the second practical phase in the food sector: “I was allowed to independently take over the project for redesigning the fruit & vegetable section, develop ideas for the new design and present them to the category manager. I was particularly proud that my ideas were taken seriously.”

In each practical phase, Globus places the students in different stores and departments so that they become familiar with locations in all regions and learn how to respond to different customer groups. Student Laura Gertel, who studies together with Lina in the 4th semester at Alanus University, particularly enjoyed working in marketing & events, where she was able to organize cross-departmental activities. “We planned and carried out a gourmet evening with tastings for Globus customers,” Laura explains. Over the course of their practical phases, students can specialize in one area. Laura, who completed vocational training as a goldsmith before her studies and worked in this field, spent her last practical phase in category management for watches and jewelry. “Thanks to my expertise, I was assigned to corporate coordination during my last practical phase, prepared statistical evaluations of successes in the watches and jewelry sector, visited stores, and was allowed to accompany the category manager in negotiations with suppliers,” Laura reports.

With each practical phase, the tasks become more demanding and the responsibility greater. Lina is already taking on the leadership of employees in her area when the manager is on vacation. “I learned in my studies at Alanus University how to motivate employees for new organizational processes,” Lina explains. “It is incredibly important to have empathy and to stay close to day-to-day business.” The experience from the arts modules she completed as part of her business studies is a valuable addition.

The topic of “sustainability,” which is a focus of the degree program, is also becoming increasingly important at Globus. New locations are being equipped with mini combined heat and power plants and photovoltaic systems, Globus cooperates with food banks, and employees are given responsibility so that they can actively help shape the company and contribute through responsible action. In her case study in the seminar “Business and Social Responsibility,” student Lina is examining the topic of “Sustainable Action” at Globus this semester.
