Textiles play a major role in the artistic work at Alanus University. This was once again made strikingly clear by this year’s Rundgang 2024, the traditional annual exhibition of final and semester projects by art students. Against this backdrop, students explored the material, techniques, and theory of textile art in a practice-oriented way over the course of a semester as part of the Studium Generale.
At the heart of the project seminar, led by Prof. Dr. Maurice Saß, was the collective conception and realization of a digital exhibition entitled “Spatialities of the Textile.” In five thematic sections, all interested visitors can now discover 38 textile artworks from different centuries through which social spaces are shaped, postcolonial perspectives are developed, sites of memory are created, gender and sexual identities are negotiated, and aesthetic experiences are made possible. All detailed descriptions and in-depth analyses of the artworks, which also include numerous student works, were written by students at Alanus University, as were the introductory texts.
The aim of the exhibition is to bring greater attention to art forms that have received too little recognition in art history, to encourage more engagement with textile art, and to offer the spatialities of the textile as one possible approach. “The project was truly a great pleasure,” concludes Prof. Dr. Maurice Saß. “The students were incredibly motivated. Everyone liked the practical and career-oriented nature of it. Many also appreciated the opportunity to work more intensively on a text and to keep improving it through the instructor’s concrete feedback, from first-semester students to master’s students. And of course, it is especially nice to have a very tangible result at the end of the semester that can be presented!”.
