Alanus students perform live with Angie Hiesl in Cologne

Sunshine, rain, wind, questioning looks from passers-by – anyone who performs outdoors loves chance. Angie Hiesl does too. On 8 July, the award-winning performance artist will teach performART students from Alanus University in Cologne’s Old Town. Spectators are warmly welcome!

Since the early 1980s, Angie Hiesl has been transforming public space into ephemeral works of art through her striking performances. One of her best-known works is the street art performance “x-mal Mensch Stuhl,” which premiered in 1995 and was presented in 38 cities across Europe, North America, and South America in 112 performances. In it, she attaches white steel chairs to building facades at heights of between four and seven metres. Sitting on them are people over the age of sixty, performing everyday actions from their lives such as reading the newspaper or folding laundry. For “x-mal Mensch Stuhl,” Angie Hiesl received the International Street Theatre Prize in Holzminden in 1998. She has been working as an artist duo with Roland Kaiser for 27 years.
