At the end of April, 16 new therapy groups will begin as part of the project “Creative Arts Therapies for Trauma Recovery in the Ahr Valley”.

The Research Institute for Creative Arts Therapies (RIArT) at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter, in cooperation with the University Medicine Essen Foundation, is investigating the extent to which a creative arts therapy program can help treat trauma suffered during the flood disaster in the Ahr Valley in July 2021 and heal psychological wounds in the “KreARTiv” study funded by Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe e.V. The new project phase starts in April with 16 new therapy groups. Places are still available.

At various locations in the Ahr Valley and the Euskirchen district, people affected by the flood disaster have the opportunity to take part in group programs free of charge to reduce the psychological effects. In addition to the therapy groups in art, music, dance, and drama therapy, which use the healing effect of art, open up a creative space, and build on the strengths of those affected, the project team is now also offering cultural and artistic activities, such as a Capoeira group. Capoeira can make a particularly strong contribution to strengthening resilience and self-confidence, reducing aggression, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. The programs are accompanied by the RIArT research team, which measures and evaluates changes in participants using established questionnaires. The project is led and scientifically evaluated by Prof. Dr. Sabine C. Koch, professor at Alanus University, and Dr. Susann Kobus from the University Medicine Essen Foundation.
