Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences will consolidate its university operations at the Bad Honnef campus in the future. To this end, its current locations in Alfter will be gradually relocated to Bad Honnef starting in September 2027. The decision was made by the university’s sponsoring body, the Emil Molt Foundation, in coordination with the Senate of Alanus University.

By consolidating its locations, the university is fundamentally restructuring its spatial organization. In future, all degree programs as well as teaching, research, and artistic activities will be brought together at one shared location. This spatial concentration is intended to create better conditions for exchange between disciplines and to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching, research, and artistic practice. The decision is part of the university’s strategic and economic development. It will help stabilize and further develop the university’s long-term structural and financial framework.

“By consolidating our locations in Bad Honnef, we are creating the foundation for the university’s future-oriented development. When students, lecturers, and staff come together in one place in the future, new opportunities for interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration will emerge. This close interconnectedness, in particular, is part of Alanus University’s profile and can be lived even more strongly in the future,” says Prof. Dr. Thomas Maschke, Rector of Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences.

Academic and work operations at the current locations will initially continue unchanged. The transition to Bad Honnef will take place gradually over a longer period starting in autumn 2027. The specific timetable and individual implementation steps are currently being developed.

Modern campus in a central location

The campus in Bad Honnef is an established university location that was previously used by IU International University of Applied Sciences and has already been operated by the Emil Molt Foundation since 1 October 2025. It features modern teaching and work spaces as well as student accommodation directly on campus. The compact campus structure enables short distances and creates good conditions for bringing together study, teaching, research, and artistic work in one place.

The further development of the campus itself is also intended to become part of teaching. In the coming autumn semester, architecture students will engage with the spatial potential of the city, the existing buildings, and open spaces, and examine how the location can be used and further developed for art and architecture in the future. In this way, the campus itself becomes a concrete space for learning and design and offers students the opportunity to engage practically with the spatial conditions of their future place of study and work.

The campus is centrally located in Bad Honnef. The town center as well as the Rhine with its green and recreational areas are within walking distance. A café, a bar, a restaurant, and the canteen on campus complement the infrastructure and provide space for encounters and exchange.
