Class for Space- and Time-Based Art by Prof. Tessa Knapp

#installation #mixedmedia #mediaart #performance

The class led by Professor Tessa Knapp works in the sensory crossover between installation, sculpture, media, and performance. With an individual focus, study here is multifaceted at the interface between spatial art (installation, sculpture, painting, photography) and time-based art (media art, film and sound art, performance, temporary art in public space). A special feature is the support of artistic strategies using media such as video, film, sound, language, light, and their respective specific qualities in analog, electronic, and digital form.

The aim of the colloquia and working discussions is, with a free choice of means, to reveal the individual process as radically and openly as possible in accordance with oneself, to develop the necessary techniques for deepening it, and to find an independent artistic position in a contemporary context. In a focused atmosphere, we therefore engage in feedback and reflection with trust, openness, and directness.

Time and again, we expand the discourse to a meta-level in order to critically question and explore the role of art in relation to contemporary phenomena. Can art raise questions about existence, society, or education? How do I find and see myself in a contemporary context, and which themes do I want to contribute through my work?

We seek exchange with other academies and universities and receive input on professionalization. Interdisciplinary impulses from related artistic disciplines as well as from academia and research are equally welcome.

“What does the material, a media apparatus, or even the body offer for my method?”
– Knapp
