Academic Support – New Upper School esbz-Berlin Zentrum

“Academic support for the New Upper School at the Evangelische Schule Berlin Zentrum”

Since summer 2015, the Institute of Educational Science and Empirical Social Research has been supporting the school project “New Upper School at ESBZ.” In addition to conventional teaching, new interdisciplinary learning formats (“Life and Work Skills Workshops (LAK),” “Pulsars,” and “Learning Expeditions (LEX)”) were gradually introduced there with the aim of giving young people the opportunity to help determine and shape their own learning path, thereby strengthening their independence and sense of responsibility. The project lead for the academic support on behalf of Alanus University is Dirk Randoll; the on-site interviews are conducted by Petra Ehrler, who is currently supporting the project as a research associate, assisted by Jürgen Peters.

ESBZ is exemplary of the development of a new culture of learning and schooling, as well as of the shift in perspective that, according to former headteacher Margret Rasfeld, is needed to transform the traditional education system in Germany.
