Free Spaces - Art Intervention at Siegburg Prison

As early as 2014, artists from the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków (headed by Prof. Zbigniew Bajek) and Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences (headed by Prof. Dr. Ulrika Eller-Rüter) jointly created 40 large-format banners under the title “Horizons of Freedom” in Montelupich Prison in Kraków. At the beginning of September 2016, the art project continued with a five-day workshop at Siegburg Prison on the theme of “Free Spaces.”

In a participatory art project, students from the painting classes of Prof. Dr. Ulrika Eller-Rüter and Prof. Zbigniew Bajek worked with inmates at Siegburg Prison to create 10 new banners on the theme of “Free Spaces.”

As part of an exhibition (19 September to 14 October 2016), these works entered into dialogue with the works created in 2014: the ten new banners were displayed in the prison church, while the 40 artworks created in Kraków hung on the prison’s outer walls.
