Sound and Imagination - Exhibition and Performances on Beethoven's Symphonies

Beethoven’s music as a source of visual creation:

As part of the Beethoven Marathon, students from the Visual Arts department at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter near Bonn presented an exhibition and performances at Galerie Bernd Bentler Bonn. The students engaged with various symphonies and showed large-format paintings, graphic works, and videos. In addition, a live painting performance on the 5th Symphony was on view.

The artists visualized tonal colors and melodic progressions in real time on an XXL floor painting. In a slow-motion performance, they “danced” the color fields and altered them at the same time—painting begins to move. In a second performance, these “visual scores” are then reinterpreted live in sound by musicians.

The exhibition also featured works made from the copper plates of the former roof of the Bonn Beethoven Hall, as well as a video work reflecting on Beethoven as an internet phenomenon and a photo series that reduces the movements of the Beethoven Orchestra to trails of light.
