Certificate Course in Speech and Theatre Education

The Certificate Course in Speech and Theatre Education in Waldorf schools, primary schools, daycare centers and after-school care has a Waldorf education focus and is suitable in its orientation for the Waldorf school, primary school, daycare and after-school care sectors in order to gain qualifications in speech and theatre education. The certificate course is intended as a meaningful addition to the range of skills of educators working in Waldorf schools, primary schools, daycare centers and after-school care. It is not an alternative to a foundational degree in theatre education or comparable training.

The following competencies can be acquired in the certificate course:

• Fundamentals of speech technique and speech art
• Aesthetic design of literary and non-literary texts
• Age-appropriate application of specific approaches to Waldorf language support and theatre education
  In addition, participants will gain:
• Guidance in theatre education exercises in the context of Waldorf schools, primary schools, daycare centers and after-school care
• Planning and implementation of topic-related theatre education projects in Waldorf schools, primary schools, daycare centers and after-school care

The requirement for successfully completing the certificate course is regular attendance and active participation in the seminars. This also includes carrying out participants’ own practical exercises and projects as well as preparing corresponding reflection reports.

A total of 4 seminars from the core courses and 4 seminars from the additional courses must be taken (see Structure & Content). Additional seminars taken will be listed on the certificate as special achievements.

The content of the Certificate Course in Speech and Theatre Education in Waldorf schools, primary schools, daycare centers and after-school care relates to the complementary fields of activity in the listed institutions and the corresponding areas of educational practice. The individual areas of speech and theatre education can be expanded through appropriate further training.

The content of the certificate course is taught over 6 semesters. In the following, the content is referred to as core and additional courses and identified by numbers for easier orientation and assignment. To successfully complete the certificate course, 4 courses from the areas numbered 01-05 and four from the areas 06-10 must be taken.

The core courses teach the theoretical and methodological-didactic foundations of speech and theatre education.

• Introduction to Waldorf education (STP 01)
• Introduction to language development and support in daycare centers and schools (STP 02)
• Introduction to speech design and speech art (STP 03)
• Introduction to the methodological-didactic practice of theatre education (STP 04)
• Directing in theatre education work with children and adolescents (STP 05)

The additional courses develop practice-related subject areas of speech and theatre education, implement them artistically and reflect on them.

• Bodywork and spoken expression (STP 6)
• Character development and scene work in theatre education practice (STP 7)
• Creative scene writing and development of participants’ own plays (STP 08)
• Biographical theatre (STP 09)
• Improvisational theatre and theatre sports (STP 10)

Integration into the degree program

The required seminars can be taken as part of the regular degree program, plus one or two block weekends per semester, and are for the most part credited both toward the certificate course and toward other modules in the field of Aesthetic Education. For guidance, the individual seminars are identified with the corresponding STP module code.

The cost for external participants attending the block weekends is 80 euros per individual event. For students in the Master of Education and the Bachelor of Childhood Education Part-time at Alanus University, the events are free of charge as part of the main course of study.
