Gender & Diversity

The certificate is aimed at all Alanus University students who would like to expand their knowledge and skills in the field of gender and diversity in order to actively apply these topics in various areas of life and professional fields.

Students at Alanus University can complete the certificate course as part of Studium Generale or as an additional accompanying course of study.

The certificate aims to provide theoretical foundations from disciplines such as gender, queer, diversity and postcolonial studies. This is associated with the opportunity to apply these foundations in practice and gain initial experience in areas such as equality, inclusion and diversity.

Basic module (4 CP): 
The main objective of the module is to provide a conceptual “kit” (including basic terms such as gender and sexual identity, intersectionality, and multiple discrimination) as well as key competencies that can also be put into practice.

Advanced module (2 CP): 
This module deepens your cultural-historical knowledge of gender-based, sexual and related forms of discrimination; it also provides insights into alternative artistic and social practices.

Contextualization module (2 CP): 
This module is intended as an invitation to better understand gender & diversity topics in the context of other issues. As in the previous module, an interdisciplinary approach is proposed in order to address current questions relating to gender & diversity.

Practical module (2 CP):
This central module of the certificate course, which serves the situational testing of some of the knowledge acquired in the other modules, consists of an individual practical experience of at least 25 hours as well as structured self-reflection.

Final module (2 CP):
This module serves to review your learning progress.

Completing all modules corresponds to comprehensive basic or individualized further qualification at university level amounting to 12 credit points / ECTS points (i.e. a workload of 300 hours).  More information about the structure and content of the certificate course can be found in the module handbook and the examination regulations.

The certificate course can be attended for a maximum of the duration of enrollment at Alanus University. All relevant coursework can be completed within four semesters at the latest. You can complete the coursework flexibly and largely in any order (with the exception of the final module).

The Department of Philosophical and Aesthetic Education offers several courses for the modules of the certificate course each semester. In addition, other courses at Alanus University can be credited if they are clearly related to the topics of the certificate course.

Enrollment at Alanus University in a full-time degree program, part-time degree program, or as a guest auditor.

The certificate course is free of charge for regular students. Guest auditors are charged a fee of EUR 100.00 when the certificate is issued.

This certificate provides a sound foundation for master’s degree programs and other advanced qualifications in fields such as gender studies, queer studies, diversity studies or empowerment studies. It promotes key competencies such as self-reflective, critical, connected and interdisciplinary thinking. In recent years, this knowledge and these skills have gained relevance in the labor market, as can be seen in the increasing establishment of positions in inclusion and diversity management. The practical module of the certificate in particular is geared toward this field of application.
