Report on the continuing education program offered by Alanus University in cooperation with the Chilean training institute EFA (Educacion, Filosofia y Arte).
In January 2025, the first in-person phase of the new certificate course in “Foreign Language Teaching at Spanish-Speaking Waldorf Schools” took place in Argentina. This course is offered by Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter near Bonn in cooperation with the Chilean training institute EFA (Educacion, Filosofia y Arte). The aim of this three-year, part-time academic continuing education program is to teach the fundamentals of Waldorf education and qualify participants for independent teaching in the field of foreign languages. The course is aimed in particular at teachers who wish to teach in Spanish-speaking countries such as Spain or Latin America, among others.
EFA is headed by Carolina Kot, an experienced lecturer in German as a foreign language at the Goethe-Institut and a Waldorf teacher. The academic implementation is overseen by Prof. Dr. Axel Föller-Mancini from the Department of Educational Science at Alanus University. The certificate course extends over three years and comprises a total of 40 weekly semester hours. The teaching formats are varied: weekly online seminars alternate with intensive digital block weeks. A special highlight of the course is the 12-day block week, which takes place annually in a Latin American country. The course, which started in March 2024 with 33 participants, experienced its first in-person phase in January 2025.
In Buenos Aires, 28 students from seven Latin American countries met, accompanied by lecturers and guests, for an intensive seminar. The host was the Waldorf school “Colegio Rudolf Steiner,” whose spacious campus could be used to excellent effect during the summer holidays. The seminar included foundation seminars on Waldorf education, foreign language didactics, as well as artistic courses and exercises. The participants, who already have various qualifications in foreign language teaching, had the opportunity to exchange ideas about their different cultural backgrounds.
The long teaching sessions, which took place from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., were enriched by creative lunch breaks in which the participants contributed their culinary skills from Peru, Argentina, Chile, and Ecuador. These culinary synergies created a pleasant atmosphere and strengthened the sense of community. At the end of the in-person phase, the skills acquired and group activities were presented and shared with one another. The emotional farewell after this eventful time leaves the students above all looking forward to the next in-person phase, which will take place in Santiago de Chile in January 2026.
