Alanus Professor Roland Kaehlbrandt publishes an ode to the German language

SPIEGEL bestseller ‘On the Beauty of the German Language’ published by Piper

Roland Kaehlbrandt, honorary professor of Language and Society at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences, has published a new non-fiction book. Under the title ‘On the Beauty of the German Language. A Rediscovery’, he explores the structure, expressive possibilities, and aesthetic qualities of German. The work was published by Piper in autumn 2025.

In it, Kaehlbrandt engages with widespread judgments about the German language – for example, its reputation for being precise, yet at the same time cumbersome and harsh-sounding. Drawing on numerous examples from everyday language, literature, and regional dialects, he shows how nuanced and diverse German is actually used. The aim of the book is to make visible the aesthetic dimensions of a language that is often taken for granted in daily use. WELT am Sonntag describes the book as an “opportunity to become aware of the […] invisible wonders of the German language.” Writer Martin Mosebach also emphasizes in a commentary that Kaehlbrandt opens “eyes and ears” to linguistic subtleties.

About Roland Kaehlbrandt
Roland Kaehlbrandt is a linguist, non-fiction author, and expert in language education. He teaches as an honorary professor of Language and Society at Alanus University. In 2022, he published the SPIEGEL bestseller ‘German – A Declaration of Love. The Ten Great Advantages of Our Astonishing Language’. Kaehlbrandt serves on the board of trustees of the German Academy for Language and Literature and has launched educational initiatives such as ‘Jugend debattiert’, the spelling competition ‘Deutschland schreibt!’, and the ‘Deutschsommer’. For his commitment to language awareness and language culture, he has been honored with major German and French awards.
