In the class of Henning Strassburger, painting is understood as the medium in which everything we see, experience, and perceive around us is filtered through the respective form of an individual painterly practice and placed within a critical discourse. In doing so, we ask ourselves what relevance painting has in the present day and examine which painterly approaches are suited to responding to this contemporary moment. In this class, the artistic point of departure is representational painting that investigates the environment as reality.The subsequent approach is open-ended and experimental – questions of form, color, and technique are clarified in the process.

The aim is for students to develop independent artistic positions and reflect on central questions of painting in both historical and contemporary contexts.

Painting is very deliberately set in relation to other disciplines within the context of the class. Discussions address music, film, literature, and pop culture. The theoretical examination of painting also holds a special significance.
