The motto of the class of Prof. Johannes Brunner is: Anything can be material! As part of their artistic education, students can draw on all artistic techniques, from classical sculptural work with clay, plaster, plastic, metal, paper, or paint to participatory concepts or light, sound, and video installations. What is important, and remains important, is personal, multifaceted experimentation, both in terms of the working process with the self-selected material and the exploration of means of expression in relation to one’s own artistic theme.

Within the painting class, Professor Johannes Brunner explores with his students this relationship between the artistic theme and the chosen material. Together, the artists search for the significance of the material in relation to the artistic theme. The function of the material is examined more closely: What does it tell, how is it used or processed, and what is its historical context? How are materials “charged”? How do materials correspond with one another, and how do they make the theme visible? Students also learn how to approach and develop a theme. Another important aspect of project work in the class is the individual support of each student and their artistic development.
