The setting-related processing of wool in dry layer felting in practice
The impact of our fast-paced and performance-oriented society leaves its mark on all of us. According to the DGPP (German Society for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy), around 28% of people in Germany are affected by mental illness, with 2023 figures indicating a worsening situation and, for example, depressive as well as anxiety symptoms having nearly doubled since 2019. This is increasingly also true for children and adolescents, especially since the coronavirus pandemic, particularly with regard to depression, anxiety disorders and eating disorders (DAK).
The method of arranging wool pictures, originally developed specifically for patients with anorexia, has for several years proven effective for a wide range of psychiatric conditions such as autism spectrum disorders, anxiety disorders, depression, trauma-related disorders and many more, and is especially suitable for symptoms where the aim is to foster a sensory connection to the material and ultimately to oneself. Due to its simplicity, it is suitable for almost any clientele, as there are hardly any contraindications. The layering technique works in a body-oriented way; however, compared to sculptural work, the quality of the wool requires hardly any physical or vital energy.
