Photo Art Therapy Continuing Education Series 27/28

The modules offered here present different artistic and art therapy methods, interventions, and their indications as well as contraindications. The theoretical background, forms of application, and case examples from the lecturer’s practice convey the distinctive approach of the respective art therapy method. Through self-exploration exercises by the participants, these approaches can be explored in greater depth and rounded out through comparisons with personal practical experience.

METHODS
Theoretical explanations on the topic alternate with photographic and art therapy interventions. Practical components take place individually or in small groups. In the plenary session, the works and the insights associated with them are discussed.

WHAT DRIVES ME as a lecturer

What fascinates me about this topic is the well-founded exploration of one’s own identity. This helps us better understand ourselves and clients in identity crises and support them more effectively. My interdisciplinary approach from different perspectives (medicine, photography, and art therapy) creates a seminar framework of sound knowledge drawn from different theories and extensive experience from my therapeutic practice. In this seminar, I would like to implement this playfully, across methods, and integratively – together with everyone involved.

Artistic therapists with a successfully completed university degree, a comparable qualification, or corresponding professional suitability, as well as people from related professional fields.

Students of artistic therapies are also very welcome – by attending the continuing education program, you can deepen and differentiate your knowledge during your studies and use the university certificates you earn in applications. Photo art training online

Safety and stability as a basis in therapy
A brief introduction to photographic technique (ASA/ISO, aperture, shutter speed), receptive and active phototherapeutic methods in theory alternate with practical photographic and artistic exercises. In small groups, you will get to know yourself and others anew through playful photographic work and artistically translate your experiences. You will learn how to guide and hold group dynamic processes. In small groups, you will practice how to create a safe framework in groups or one-to-one settings through photo art therapy and how to establish stability in your clients through artistic activity.

Safety and stability as a basis in therapy
We all live in relationship – with ourselves, with inner parts, with nature, with other people. In this module, you will experience how varied contact can be. Through photo art therapy, you will explore the influences of close attachment figures and the patterns of your childhood. In an experimental, playful way, you will investigate new and different possibilities for shaping relationships and anchor them creatively and in a body-oriented way. We work receptively and biographically with photos from your childhood. Through photo transfer, you can encounter old, negatively connoted memories and place them into new, more healing or needs-oriented contexts through collage, distortion, or reframing.

Photographic or videographic work with emotions
This module focuses on the artistic handling of emotions such as anger, fear, grief, shame, or guilt in therapy. Using case examples from therapeutic practice, it shows how you can work with these feelings in your own practice and how healing photographic or artistic expression and the associated movement can be. Together, we will develop a new photographic or artistic approach to problematic, split-off, or traumatic events.

Ego and Self, Self-Image and External Image
This module focuses on self-image and external image, on self-perception and the perception of others. In small groups, participants photograph one another using various techniques. Photographic exploration of the self with and without motion blur, followed by photographic reproduction and painterly implementation on paper or canvas. Group discussion of the resulting works

Indication and Contraindication

In this concluding module, we will work online. You will learn about the possibilities for working with clients through photo art therapy online, either one-to-one or in groups. Case examples from practice alternate with self-exploration exercises via Zoom in the large plenary group and in breakout sessions.

In a review of the 5 modules, we will address indications and contraindications of photo art therapy.

If you would like to earn a university certificate, you must participate in all five modules of the continuing education program. From Module III onward, you may begin preparing an assessment in the form of a photo art therapy case documentation, a photo art therapy method development, or an essay, which you will then present online in Module V.

Judith Haeusler is an art therapist, state-certified photo designer, trauma therapist (Somatic Experiencing according to P. Levine), and licensed alternative practitioner for psychotherapy with numerous additional qualifications in body-oriented and systemic methods. She works independently in art and photo therapy in her practice in Prien and at a neuropsychiatric clinic. She regularly offers seminars in photo art therapy for clients and interested participants. Her approach is one of applied art, expanded by anthroposophical, systemic, body-oriented, and depth psychological aspects.
