From the first groundbreaking to the harvest: New university field at Campus II

Nature education is now being taught in the Childhood Education degree program at Alanus University on a newly established university field. The non-profit organization Acker e. V. supports the project with its CampusAckerdemie program.

Since the spring semester of 2023, the 4th-semester Childhood Education students (full-time), under the direction of Dr. Philipp Gelitz, have been receiving practical sessions and know-how on gardening with children from the experienced AckerCoach Miriam Stollenwerk. Alanus University is therefore among the first universities and vocational colleges to integrate the creation of a school garden or kindergarten garden into their curriculum under expert guidance. In the years to come, students will therefore also have the opportunity not only to learn in the seminar room, but to apply their knowledge directly on site in the field.

“I am very pleased that from now on we have the opportunity to spend most of our nature education seminars on our new field. With the help of the expert from CampusAckerdemie, we are learning together what education for sustainable development can look like in concrete terms. We are doing something instead of talking. I am convinced that this has great educational value for us adults and, as a result, also for the children entrusted to us,” says Philipp Gelitz.
