PerformART students at Alanus University present a collective research journey into the realm of the dead on 24 January 2024.
What role does collective experience in art play in coping with strokes of fate that can affect individuals or an entire society? In search of an answer, the performART students at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences set out in their new piece “of disappearing…” on a research journey into the realm of the dead, bringing secrets to light that perhaps would have been better left hidden. The premiere will take place at the Courtyard Theatre, the venue of the Acting department, on 24 January 2024 at 7:30 pm in the main hall at Campus I – Johannishof in Alfter.
In their performance “of disappearing…”, under the direction of Bonn actor, dancer, and choreographer Alois Reinhardt, the students take up the central themes of death and loss from the ancient myth of Orpheus and explore the power of art as a cathartic moment and unifying collective ritual for coping with the unmanageable. In developing the piece, they were inspired, among other things, by the radio play “Orpheus or Izanagi – The Return from the Realm of the Dead” by the award-winning Japanese writer Yoko Tawada.
Alois Reinhardt has been a permanent ensemble member at Theater Bonn since 2013 and has been teaching regularly as an acting lecturer at Alanus University since 2018. Over the course of his career, this versatile talent has worked with numerous renowned dancers and directors, including Meg Stuart, choreographer of “Compagnie Damaged Goods”, Ayman Harper, member of “The Forsythe Company”, as well as Icelandic opera and theatre director Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson. In 2020, Reinhardt was awarded the “Thespis” theatre prize.
