More first-year students at Alanus University!

Upward trend in the 2024/25 fall semester.

With currently more than 410 new students for the 2024/25 fall semester, Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter near Bonn is pleased to report an increase compared to the previous year. In view of the declining number of first-semester students across Germany in recent years, this is cause for optimism, explains Prof. Dr. Thomas Maschke, who took office as university rector on 1 September. The positive trend also once again confirms the special concept of the private, state-recognized university of arts, which places great value on openness, diversity, and multiple perspectives and thus ultimately on tolerance and democracy.

Inclusion as the participation of all people in education and society is particularly close to Maschke’s heart. As a professor of inclusive education, he has been researching and teaching on the subject for years: “In the future, this will become even more of a focus in the development of the university,” he emphasized in his address at the first-year welcome ceremony on 23 September 2024. Alfter’s mayor, Dr. Rolf Schumacher, also appreciates the university’s commitment to a participatory society, for example in the planned art therapy program for children and their parents from the new accommodation for migrants in the immediate vicinity of Campus II. In his welcoming remarks, he invited the new students to play an active role in shaping life in Alfter. Through the stage program presented by students and lecturers, featuring live music, theater improvisation, and interactive activities, the first-year students were also given a lively preview of the creative potential they can develop during their studies.
