Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences awards Germany Scholarships for the fourteenth time, this year’s DAAD Prize for international students, as well as additional scholarships.
This year, 50 students at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter near Bonn are receiving a Germany Scholarship. At a ceremonial event, the students were honored and presented with their certificates. Among the scholarship recipients is Nadezhda Kurbatova from Russia, a student in the Bachelor’s degree program in Fine Arts. She was awarded the DAAD Prize of the German Academic Exchange Service, which is endowed with 1,000 euros. In 2024, a total of seven international students will also receive support through the DAAD-funded scholarship program “Alanus International”. In addition, two Karin Halft Scholarships, five Alanus Art Scholarships, and two Emil Molt Scholarships were awarded.
The Chancellor and Rector of the university extend their congratulations to the scholarship recipients
Just last week, Prof. Dr. Thomas Maschke was ceremonially handed over his office as new Rector of Alanus University, and today he congratulates a total of 67 scholarship recipients and prizewinners. He makes it clear: “Scholarships create freedom for commitment, both within and beyond one’s studies. They open up spaces for creative and collaborative processes. They make exchange and openness possible. Ultimately, they support a vibrant democracy!” At the scholarship award ceremony, the Chancellor of Alanus University, Michael Schröder, also offered his congratulations and not only highlighted the scholarship recipients’ special commitment, but also thanked the sponsors for their generous support: “You are the ones who make dreams come true and foster the will to get involved in personal and social life.”
More than 330 Germany Scholarships in fourteen years
Since 2012, more than 330 students at Alanus University have received a Germany Scholarship worth 300 euros per month, each for one year. These are funded half by donations from private sponsors or companies and half by resources from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In addition to outstanding academic achievement and social commitment, social, family-related, or personal circumstances are also taken into account in the selection process.
This year’s sponsors of the Germany Scholarships include AIB-Stiftung, Alanus Stiftung, Bund der Freien Waldorfschulen e.V., Dennree GmbH, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Emil-Molt-Stiftung, Fassbender Stiftung, Förderverein der Alanus Hochschule e.V., Karin-Halft Stiftung, Kreissparkasse Köln, Direktion Siegburg, Meyer-Köring Rechtsanwälte und Steuerberater Partnerschaftsgesellschaft mbH, Phoenix Reisen GmbH, Quarzwerke Witterschlick GmbH, Schöllgen Haustechnik GmbH, Stiftung der VR-Bank Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, Trägergesellschaft für geisteswissenschaftliche Bildung gGmbH, and Wirtschaftsförderung Alfter GmbH.
DAAD Prize and the “Alanus International” scholarship program support the commitment of international students
This year, the DAAD Prize was awarded to Nadezhda Kurbatova from Russia, a Bachelor’s student in Fine Arts. Program director Prof. Ulrika Eller-Rüter is impressed by the student’s achievements: “With her textile art and graphic works, Nadezhda Kurbatova consistently takes a stand on current events. In her striking sewn series ‘17.3.22, 5.4.22,17.3.22’, she addresses the experience of war and destruction in the Ukraine conflict through torn and ripped pictorial surfaces. As a native Russian, Nadezhda looks ‘to the other side’ and tries to immerse herself in its reality. In doing so, by artistic means, she also makes a valuable contribution to peacebuilding and international understanding between peoples.”
The DAAD Prize is awarded to international students or doctoral candidates for outstanding achievements. The selection criteria include exceptional academic or artistic performance as well as remarkable social or intercultural commitment. The prize is financed from funds provided by the Federal Foreign Office.
Two Karin Halft Scholarships for outstanding artistic work
In addition, Karin Halft Scholarships were awarded to Thea Uecker and Rosa Wilms-Posen from the Bachelor’s degree program in Fine Arts. The scholarship is aimed at art students at Alanus University who have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements in their studies. The prize money of 1,000 euros each is financed by Alanus Stiftung and Karin Halft-Stiftung.
