Architecture students at Alanus University win the “BDA Masters 2023” with their design “Future Engine”.
Renovate instead of building anew! – Jakob Mehrens, Paul Epple and Silva Schulz impressed at the “BDA Masters 2023” with their sustainable design “Future Engine” for the listed KHD administration building in the Otto Langen Quarter in Cologne-Mülheim. On 16 November 2023, the Association of German Architects, BDA NRW honored a total of five group projects by graduates of bachelor’s degree programs in architecture and urban planning from various universities across North Rhine-Westphalia. The prizewinners will each receive a scholarship of 2,000 euros once they begin their master’s studies.
The BDA jurors praised the Alanus students’ strategy for revitalizing this industrially significant site. “The existing building is complemented by an unsentimental yet sensitive new development that creates new qualities of use through terraces and communication spaces,” was their verdict.
“We feel honored and are very grateful for the support provided by the BDA scholarship,” say Jakob Mehrens, Paul Epple and Silva Schulz. In Cologne’s Otto Langen Quarter, fossil fuel-based combustion engines were once produced. With their design, the three transform the associated KHD administration building into a vibrant community space, a so-called “Future Engine,” through technical, structural, and spatial conversion measures. Their vision is to bring together living, art and commerce, education and communication under one roof, and to obtain the energy needed for heating from an aquathermal system in the Rhine. They were supervised in the development process by Prof. Swen Geiss and Miriam Hamel from the Department of Architecture at Alanus University.
