“An Enabler”

Thomas Maschke will become the new Rector of Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences on 1 September 2024.

The Senate of Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences in Alfter has elected a new Rector: Thomas Maschke will take over the office from Hans-Joachim Pieper on 1 September 2024. As a professor and head of the Institute for Waldorf Education, Interculturality and Inclusion at the Mannheim campus, Maschke has already been closely associated with Alanus University for many years. Hans-Joachim Pieper will retire at the end of his term of office.

Thomas Maschke is a trained special education and Waldorf teacher as well as Professor of Inclusive Education with a focus on emotional and social development. His publications offer practical approaches for teachers and schools on the path to inclusion. In terms of his professional orientation, he sees himself as an “enabler” of diversity and participation. He would also like to bring this expertise to his new role as Rector: “I will devote all my energy to strengthening and further developing Alanus University, together with all staff and students, in its commitment to an open society,” he describes his vision. The current Rector Hans-Joachim Pieper also considers his succession to be in the best hands: “My warmest congratulations to Thomas Maschke on his election! We are already working closely together on the Rectorate, and I am convinced that he will continue to advance this university’s unique humanistic educational concept.”

The handover of office will be celebrated at a ceremonial event with invited guests on 11 October.
