Alanus University establishes Green Office

Sustainable initiatives and projects at the university are to be collected, networked, and supported – this is now the task of the newly established Green Office at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. The team of four students and two academic staff members “supports the university in its role as a driving force for social and ecological transformation toward greater sustainability,” says Rector Hans-Joachim Pieper, patron of the Green Office.

The Green Office is therefore supporting the preparation of a sustainability report for the university and advocating for a travel policy designed according to ecological criteria. The Green Office also supports regional networking with stakeholders from business and politics, the Fairtrade University initiative, and collaboration with Bonn4Future. In addition, it has made it its mission to raise awareness across the university of issues relating to a responsible, fairer, and more environmentally conscious society. To this end, the team is organizing a university-wide Sustainability Day in May under the motto “Actively shaping a sustainable future for society – How can a university contribute to this?”

Actively shaping a sustainable future for society – guided by this principle, Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences promotes the academic and personal education of the whole person. Through the interaction of art and science, the university provides impetus and opens up spaces for sustainable social transformation. This state-recognized university of the arts has two campuses in Alfter on the border with Bonn and a study center in Mannheim. It offers degree programs in architecture, fine arts, acting, eurythmy, art therapy, education, business administration, and philosophy; its Department of Educational Sciences has the right to award doctorates. Currently, around 1,900 students are enrolled, and all degrees are state-recognized.
