“We show that companies have no incentive to substantially improve the environmental performance of their products solely on the basis of consumers’ willingness to pay. This is highly problematic in view of the urgent need for sustainable development in today’s market economies. Targeted policy interventions such as mandatory negative labeling are therefore unavoidable,” says Prof. Dr. Lars Petersen, Chair of Production and Service Management in the Department of Business.

In the Journal of Industrial Ecology (an A journal according to the VHB ranking), Prof. Dr. Lars Petersen published, together with Prof. Dr. Jacob Hörisch, Centre for Sustainability Management at Leuphana University Lüneburg, and Dr. Kathleen Jacobs, Institute for Food and Resource Economics at the University of Bonn, an article on the influence of environmental information on willingness to pay. The article “Worse Is Worse and Better Doesn’t Matter? The Effects of Favorable and Unfavorable Environmental Information on Consumers’ Willingness to Pay” is available online free of charge.
