Interview with Alumna Marieke Frevel

Marieke studied Business Administration – Rethinking Economics at Alanus University and now works at our practical partner Suntec Energiesysteme

In 2021, she was elected to the board of the alumni association of the Department of Economics. From 2013 to 2016, Marieke completed the practice-integrated bachelor’s degree program Business Administration – Rethinking Economics and completed her practical phases at dm-drogerie markt. She now works at our practical partner SUNTEC Energiesysteme.

What did you do after completing your degree?
After my studies, I worked for my practical partner dm in and around Hanover. In the meantime, my two sons were born. Since the summer, I have been employed in human resources at SUNTEC Energiesysteme. The company is based in Würzburg, but thanks to working from home and my friendship with Johannes (a former fellow student and also an employee at SUNTEC Energiesysteme), I can work from Witten.
 
What did you learn at Alanus University?
Above all, I learned a great deal about myself through the art modules and the many group projects. Ms. Graupe also had a lasting influence on me, among other things. In her economics modules, I learned to think critically.
 
How do you apply what you learned at Alanus University in your everyday professional life?
Among other things, I keep returning to the question of fair pay, and also to the question of how we can enable employees to want to help shape things in their daily work and to be able to do so – with fond remembrance of Honorary Professor Mr. Rehn (founder of Alnatura).
 
What has been your most formative experience with Alanus University?
I still remember the Fishbanks project very clearly. In a simulation, two teams had tried to cooperate in order not to overfish the sea. In the end, however, the group that had made the most profit was “rewarded.” We felt this was very unfair and began a passionate discussion. For me, this was where “Rethinking Economics” was clearly tangible.
 
What do you miss when you think of Alanus University?
Uschi (the lady in the cafeteria) from the canteen. Being together with all the people who could not have been more different and who nevertheless always pulled together when it mattered. Art modules. Coffee at Johannishof. Regulars’ table at “Petras Braustube,” with and without lecturers. Exciting group projects.
 
What do you wish for Alanus University?
I wish Alanus University that it retains its creativity and continues to attract good and inspiring people.
