We mourn the loss of Bernd Fichtner

Our colleague Bernd Fichtner passed away on 28 March at the age of 80.

For many years, the educational scientist from the University of Siegen was a dedicated companion of Alanus University. Bernd Fichtner inspired our students in education and teacher training through his motivating didactics. In addition to his regular seminar teaching, he was continuously involved in committee work. He was an external member of our doctoral committee and served on the academic advisory board.

Bernd Fichtner was a true believer whenever he had the opportunity to point out the strengths and distinctive profile of Alanus University within his own circles or even on the international stage. As an educational scientist, he always sought points of connection with intercultural significance. In the course of extensive research activity, this gave rise to a multi-perspective understanding of “appropriation” and “learning,” which he refined empirically through encounters with people from different cultures.

This interest was manifested in an especially outstanding way in the academic and personal contacts he maintained in Brazil. Bernd Fichtner spoke fluent Portuguese and, together with colleagues from this large Latin American country, initiated research projects, conferences, and publications.

As part of a cooperation between Alanus University, the universities of Siegen and Mackenzie (São Paulo), research activities have been taking place in the Brazilian metropolis since 2018. There, too, colleagues from Alfter were able to experience the esprit and commitment of our esteemed colleague.

Alanus University bids farewell to a friend and scholar whose humanistic orientation was palpable in every interpersonal situation.
