Alanus University's First Sustainability Report Is Now Available!

We put sustainability into practice under the motto “Shaping society for the future.” The sustainability report prepared by students now documents, for the first time in a systematic way, all sustainable activities at our university while also highlighting potential for improvement.
Sustainability is implemented at Alanus University in many different ways: whether through degree programs such as Sustainable Management, solar panels on the university rooftops, annual events such as the Public Climate School, the establishment of a Green Office, or a vegetarian cafeteria. In 2023, the university was named a Fairtrade University for the third year in a row.
The sustainability report was prepared by students from the Department of Economics for the reporting period 2019 to 2021 and presented to Rector Hans-Joachim Pieper in July 2023. It was guided by the university-specific German Sustainability Code (DNK), with standardized criteria in the four fields of action: operations, research and teaching, leadership and administration, as well as external cooperation and communication. The student initiative was supported by lecturers from the Department of Economics and the university’s Green Office.
“With the sustainability report, we want to provide the impetus to strategically define and implement sustainability efforts and communicate them transparently within the university and to the outside world. Many universities now prepare sustainability reports. This makes it all the more important that we, as a distinctly green university, are able to present this report,” explain the two students Johannes Klopp and Caroline von Friesen from the student initiative.
