Panel discussion on 6 December 2024 with writer Ingo Schulze on ‘Language and the Culture of Debate in Democracy’ at Alanus University.

The well-known German writer and President of the German Academy for Language and Literature, Ingo Schulze, will be a guest at Alanus University in Alfter near Bonn on Friday, 6 December 2024, at 7:30 pm. As part of a panel discussion, he will join Alanus professor Roland Kaehlbrandt to discuss questions of language and the culture of debate in our democracy. What is the state of our debate culture? What condition is public language use in? What can literature contribute to language culture in a positive sense? Everyone interested is warmly invited; admission is free!

Ingo Schulze, born in Dresden in 1962, has received numerous major literary awards. His works have been translated into 30 languages. He celebrated his first major literary success in 1995 with “33 Moments of Happiness”, followed in 1998 by an even greater success with the book “Simple Stories”. His most recent book, “A Guest in the West”, is an affectionate portrait of the Ruhr region and of “life deep in the West”. Since the end of 2023, Ingo Schulze has been President of the German Academy for Language and Literature, which is dedicated to the cultivation and promotion of German literature and language. It is particularly well known for annually awarding the Georg Büchner Prize. The Academy has nearly 200 members from the fields of literature and linguistics. Prof. Dr. Roland Kaehlbrandt is an author and teaches linguistics at Alanus University with a focus on language and society. Most recently, he published the bestseller “German – a Declaration of Love.”
