Architecture students at Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences win the prestigious student award of the Association of German Architects NRW with their vision for post-war architecture in Warsaw.
“Residential towers,” “grey mice,” and “sculptural wing buildings” – how should we deal with the relics of rapid housing construction after the Second World War? Instead of demolishing existing building stock, Annika Roder, Karolina Toczewska, and Annika Sharma from Alanus University in Alfter near Bonn argue, using the example of aging prefabricated apartment blocks in Warsaw, for reinterpreting the spatial potential of these buildings and adapting them to today’s needs and housing standards through targeted interventions. They present the results in their bachelor’s thesis “Forgotten Ideas – Failed Visions of Post-War Architecture in Warsaw,” for which they have now been awarded the “BDA Masters 2024” student prize of the Association of German Architects NRW.
“Transformation instead of demolition – this is a contemporary and sustainable way of dealing with existing buildings,” the jury stated during the “BDA Masters 2024” award ceremony at TH Köln. In total, the most outstanding works by graduates of bachelor’s degree programs in architecture and urban design from 14 universities across NRW were honored. The prizewinners can look forward to a scholarship of 2,000 euros each once they begin their master’s degree.
The work of the Alanus students was supervised by Prof. Swen Geiss and Junior Prof. Miriam Hamel, who conduct research at the Department of Architecture at Alanus University on resource-conserving and process-oriented approaches in architecture.
