Exhibition “Interwoven Worlds” at Alfter Town Hall

An artistic project by Alanus University for the self-development of children with refugee backgrounds

Art can be a language when words are missing. The project “Interwoven Worlds” by Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences gives children with refugee backgrounds the space to express experiences, memories, and wishes artistically. The results of this multi-month project will be on display at Alfter Town Hall from 26 March 2026. The exhibition presents works created in workshops at the Institute for Art Therapy – paintings, collages, and sculptural works in which personal stories become visible.

The project began in October 2024 and was developed by Alanus University in cooperation with the Municipality of Alfter and funded by the Rhein-Sieg district. Children from Alfter worked with support from students in the Department of Artistic Therapies and Therapy Sciences using various artistic media such as painting, clay, and collage. In a protected atmosphere, they were able to process their experiences, build self-confidence, and form new relationships.

“In artistic work, the strengths and perspectives of the children become visible,” says project leader Rabea Müller. “Many bring great creative curiosity, imagination, and expressive power. The workshops open up the opportunity for them to discover and further develop these resources.”

An important bridge between the university and families is formed by the cooperation with the Municipality of Alfter. Social worker Alexia Xiromeriti established contact with families and accommodations and supported the project both organizationally and in terms of content. “The regular meetings created a reliable space in which the children can be creative and connect with one another,” she says. “This gives rise not only to impressive works, but also to new connections – between the families, the municipality, and the university.”

The exhibition “Interwoven Worlds” offers insights into these processes and shows how artistic work can promote integration, encounters, and shared learning. The opening reception will take place on 26 March at 5 p.m. at Alfter Town Hall. The exhibition will then remain on view until 29 April.
