The course is designed to prepare actors and narrators for employment within stage, broadcasting, film and television environments.

Course Content
The course focuses on five main areas: rehearsal and performance of plays, speech, singing, movement and dramaturgy.

  • Play and role rehearsal (16 units a week during the core studies) including a public performance at the end of the semester
  • Speech, microphone technique, singing within a group and in one-to-one tuition,
  • movement, dance, acrobatics, fencing
  • One-to-one-tuition in playing a role, both self-devised and classic theatre characters
  • Public performance projects, devised in a group or solo
  • Acting for the camera
Careers advice within performing arts
Rigorous preparation for work as a professional performing artist, including self-management skills and coaching from professionals. Students will put their skills into practice through various workshops and public performances.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration
The close proximity of the drama, visual arts and humanities departments at Alanus University offers a wide range of opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with lecturers and students from other departments. Students have the chance to participate in a range of projects and collaborate with specialists from allied disciplines, such as dancers, painters, sculptors, architects, entrepreneurs and business managers.

Personal Development
The course enables the students to independently devise their own productions, develop independent ideas and think creatively, whilst also facilitating intellectual, emotional and technical development as an actor or performing artist

Cultural Studies
The Studium Generale programme at Alanus University is designed to offer all students the opportunity to reflect on their creative work and to place it within a larger social and historical context. Subjects include history of philosophy, cognitive science, theatre studies and art and cultural history. The aim is to encourage students to think critically and independently and to help them develop towards an informed stance with regard to contemporary issues.

Throughout the course students are taught and mentored by internal lecturers and professors as well as visiting practitioners and experienced professionals within the field.

Mode of Study

The course is delivered through project work leading to public performance, tuition in small groups and one-to-one, lectures, seminars and tutorials, excursions, workshops and work placements.

Course Structure
After the basic study period of four semesters there is an intermediate examination which includes assessment of participation in a dramatic production as well as a written and oral examination. To be admitted to the intermediate examination, students must have passed all assessments required in the basic study period.

The final diploma exam extends over two semesters. The first part of the exam is the final production in the seventh semester. The second part of the exam is the rehearsal of auditions and a written thesis followed by a colloquium.
