Visas
A foreign student wishing to enter Germany requires a visa. The visa must be issued by the German Embassy or the German Consulate in your home country. Applicants and students from EU states, the EFTA states and states with whom Germany has agreed special conditions, are exempt from this regulation. Please ask at your German Embassy whether or not you need a visa and which kind of visa you might need.

The staff of the German Embassy or Consulate check the applicant’s financial situation and apply for the approval of the relevant immigration authority in Germany. If the Embassy or Consulate staff find no reason to refuse entrance, the application will be approved and the visa can be issued.

There are three types of visas: a language course visa, which cannot be changed into a study visa, a visa for university applicants, which is valid for three months provided that you have not yet been admitted to a university, and a study visa, which is valid for one year.

Financial Requirements
If you would like to study in Germany, you must be able to prove to the German Embassy/Consulate staff and the immigration authorities that you have sufficient funds to finance your stay. You can do this by means of a so-called “Finanzierungsnachweis” (proof of funding) for one year, which is to certify that you can finance your stay here without needing social benefits. Average living expenses come to approximately Eur 700-800 per month, plus tuition fees. This amount can of course vary depending on your lifestyle.
